Sea-We-Me

SPEAKER(S)
Dhanya Pilo
RESPONDENT
Amrita Gupta

Dhanya Pilo’s trajectory as a nomadic urbanist, artist, filmmaker, and educator has been shaped by continuous movement across landscapes, disciplines, and communities. Through this lens, she understands public spaces not as fixed entities, but as fluid environments shaped by social practice, collective memory, and ecological interdependence. These principles inform The Decoy, to move beyond the visual and symbolic presence of decoy ducks as more than mere hunting tools: they become metaphors for agency, misdirection, and community narratives. The Decoy seeks to disrupt passivity in public space and catalyze imaginative engagement through an object that is at once playful and politically charged. It merges environmental literacy, artistic expression, and urban critique into a participatory framework that resonates across disciplines and spaces. By moving through waterways and city edges, just as Pilo moved across continents and coastlines, the talk channels the nomadic spirit toward collective reorientation and deeper connections.

Known for her work in creating unique visual experiences, often blending art, technology and community, Pilo is also an intrepid sailor usually based in Mumbai, unless she is out sailing, exploring the various water bodies on Planet Earth. Recently, she was part of the historic All Women Sailing Team Maiden that won the Ocean Globe Race 2023-24 (and made history). In 2007, she founded The WALL Project India, a public art movement in Mumbai and in 2018 Algorave India took the form of an art collective to promote programming as performance art through the practice of live-coding, that is, writing and editing code live in front of an audience to create music and visuals.

The respondent in this conversation is Amrita Gupta, an art historian and co-director at CASP.
